Last week I had a really great time talking to the librarians with the Pioneer Library System. They asked terrific questions, gave me a mug and kisses (chocolate--yum), and even paid me to "appear." But best of all, they bought a boat-load of books. They'd pre-ordered 17 books, and I sold another 10, which made it my best "signing" ever. Not all those books are destined for the libraries, but I'd say probably 22-24 of them will eventually show up.
As of yesterday, two of those had.** Now I'll be obsessively checking to see if anyone takes them OUT of the library.
I can't thank these ladies (and one man) enough for their support. I hope they remember me when it's time for Dead In Red to be ordered. (Early May.) I really, REALLY want people to read my Jeff books. I'm more heavily invested emotionally in that series, and with a small publisher, it really is a crapshoot that the book will find homes in the thousands of libraries around the country. Even less if I come up short again with a national review. (It's all luck.)
Not that I won't be torturing myself looking for libraries with Murder Is Binding when it comes out. (As well as checking my Ingram and Amazon numbers.) Hey, come June/July I can torture myself by tracking the two books.
Yeah, that's what being an author is all about. Torturing yourself.
(That wasn't on the job description when I signed up for this gig.)
** Since I wrote this, another 8 have shown up. WOW! Come on readers in Ontario, Wayne, Wyoming and Livingston counties--take my book out of the library!
