To freeze a row, you select (highlight) the first row below the one you want to freeze, then on the window menu click "freeze panes". To freeze a column, select the first column to the right of what you want to freeze. If you want to freeze both rows and columns, select the one cell below and to the right of where you want the split to appear.
I love excel too, I use it for just about everything! Good luck!
